Software Engineer for Marine Environmental Database
The Ocean Research & Conservation Association has an immediate opening, suitable
for a postdoctoral appointment or junior-level engineering staff position. ORCA, a 501c3
not-for-profit organization, develops and operates networks of wireless marine monitoring equipment consisting of custom and off-the-shelf sensor systems. The data and secondary data products from this ever-changing collection of remote sensors are of the highest value to the organization. We seek an environmental data specialist to build and maintain the data archive resulting from our field operations and to build the tools necessary for structured access to the database.
Primary Responsibilities: Tailor database access to the individual needs of an internal team of engineers, scientists, and technicians. Work closely with designers for customized presentation of data products to the general public and to an external customer base of scientists, resource managers, and government officials.
Primary duties: Maintain database of measurements from ORCA’s Kilroy marine sensor network, build web applications using Django for data entry, query and presentation for customer driven data requirements and other duties as assigned.
Secondary duties: Assist ORCA team members with development and deployment of Kilroy sensors, provide field support for Kilroy maintenance/troubleshooting, assist employees with day-to-day troubleshooting of minor computer problems, setup of shared resources, and other duties as assigned.
Requirements: B.S. or M.S. in Oceanography, Marine Science, or a related discipline w/ strong background in database centered web application design, or a degree in Computer Science or a related discipline with a familiarity with environmental or oceanographic measurements.
Experience with PostgreSQL, Python, Django, Javascript, and web services is essential.
Priority will be given to those applicants familiar with computational modeling and data assimilation. Work experience may be substituted for educational requirements.
Position will require sitting for extended periods, working outdoors and on the water as needed.
Desired: Experience with geospatial databases, scalable web architectures, Subversion source control, the Eclipse development environment, and Windows & Linux server administration.
Experience with wired and wireless industrial communications architectures and protocols such as Modbus. Programming experience in C, Java, Matlab, and ActionScript.
